We continue to track government actions that may affect your organization. The Trump Administration’s recent budget proposal includes reductions in funding many of you rely on.

At this point these are just proposed reductions but we want to make you aware of sources for tracking this information and focus on two major proposed reductions.

We need the people most affected by these changes to speak up and put on a face on impact of these cuts. Sign up for our May 22nd webinar if you want to know more about advocating as a 501c3 organization.

The National Council of Nonprofits is a reliable source of information and provides a useful summary here. As they note, the proposed cuts will widely affect energy-efficiency programs and infrastructure, emergency preparedness, substance use treatment and mental health supports, services for refugees, and various housing and community development-related programs including these two:

Proposed Elimination of the CDFI Fund
President Trump’s Proposed Budget for Fiscal 2026 calls for the elimination of the Treasury Department’s Community Development Financial Institutions (“CDFI”) Fund. The administration argues federal grants are unnecessary because the CDFI industry has matured and now has sufficient access to private capital.

Deep Cuts to HUD Programs
The proposal also includes a 44% cut to the Department of Housing and Urban Development (“HUD”). The budget would eliminate both Community Development Block Grants (“CDBG”) and the HOME Investment Partnerships Program. It would also cut nearly $27 billion from HUD programs for (i) tenant-based rental assistance, (ii) public housing, (iii) project-based rental assistance, (iv) housing for the elderly and (v) housing for those living with disabilities and then convert these programs into block grants to the states.

Speak Up! While Congress considers the President’s proposed cuts and their own agenda, the community most affected by these changes has an opportunity to speak up.

Reach out and let your elected representatives know what these cuts will mean to people in your community and the chaos that could ensue. Toward that end, we will offer a free webinar May 22nd on advocacy for 501c3 organizations.
